Norfolk cuts building study ask to $2.7 million
School Board · Meeting of September 22, 2026
Norfolk schools trim building study request to $2.7 million ahead of December ballot vote. The Norfolk School Building Committee, through liaison Birch Duggins-Warp, told the School Committee it settled on $2.7 million for a feasibility study and schematic design, down from an earlier $3.1 million estimate after MSBA clarified its inflation assumptions. Officials said partnering with the state could save the town nearly $20 million on eventual construction costs, with roughly 50 percent of feasibility costs reimbursed.
The request goes to fall town meeting first, requiring what officials believe is a two-thirds vote, before a targeted December 17 ballot question. Separately, the committee unanimously adopted an updated medical and behavioral health emergency response plan, adding Narcan administration guidance, and waived a third reading to adopt a new "Protect Act" student data privacy policy. An AI use policy, delayed after parent and teacher representatives were unavailable, now heads to an October vote.
"This 2.7 million will get us all the way to beginning ready to break ground," Duggins-Warp said.
