Norfolk panel votes to seek $3.1M for school study
Other Committee · Meeting of September 9, 2026
Norfolk school building panel settles on $3.1 million feasibility ask over a lower alternative. The committee voted 3-0, with one member absent, to request $3.1 million rather than $2.9 million in the December Town Meeting warrant article and ballot question needed to keep the Freeman-Kennedy School expansion eligible for Massachusetts School Building Authority funding. Members called the gap between the two figures "a little bit of a psychological thing" but chose the higher number as a hedge against construction-cost inflation, since no additional funds can be sought after the state's Dec. 25 deadline without a new town vote.
The move follows Norfolk's earlier, self-funded $39 million addition plan, which passed at Town Meeting but failed at the ballot before the town was accepted into the MSBA program, which has historically reimbursed about 52 percent of Norfolk's school project costs. Both the Town Meeting and ballot votes on the new request must pass by Dec. 25.
